Winter Blues in Brown Skin

Scraped my skin raw so you could see

my brown isn’t all I am…

my voice carries with the wind

I  speak in singsong like birds

this  dark chocolate outer layer tastes good to some

their bellies are always full with delight

my mind is heavy from the winter blues

I wrap myself in a a quilt of words by  Shakespeare, Poe, Frost, Toni Morrison, Maya Angelou…

James Baldwin, Gwendolyn Brooks, Nikki Giovanni, and some Sonia Sanchez

moon kissed this hot cocoa to sleep

so I could..  dream of days when my smile spoke for me
